A luxury Hotel in Copenhagen, Denmark is the place to be for foodies, fitness fans and greenies - especially if you're all of the above. Here you can hop on a pedaling bike to stay fit while at the same time generate electricity and earn a free meal.
With this strategy, the Crowne Plaza Hotel situated in the heart of the Danish capital - the host of last year's climate change conference - is taking the term 'reducing your carbon footprint' and 'being green' to a whole new level.
The luxury hotel has connected two pedaling bikes to generators. They are free to use for guests.
Every person that generates 100 watt hours will not only contribute to the hotel's electricity supply in an environmentally friendly way, but also stay in shape and get a meal worth approximately $36 to make up for the lost calories.
The two bicycles are equipped with screens so riders can see how much electricity they have generated. According to the hotel's spokesperson "a person in bad shape has to pedal about 10 minutes to generate 10 watt hours. Someone in good shape can generate up to 100 watt hours in 60 minutes."
Apart from using pedal power to generate electricity, the 26-floor hotel with over 300 rooms is the first in Denmark to get all its energy through renewable and sustainable sources, such as solar panels and a groundwater-based cooling and heating system.
