A Small Business Case: The Merits of Energy Efficient T8 Tube Lights

Sep 29

Today’s new generation of optimized, “high-efficiency” T8 lamps and electronic ballasts are available in a range of energy-saving models. Energy efficient lamp and ballast systems contribute significantly to reducing energy consumption and costs by nearly 30%. Paybacks of one to three years are common.

Upgrading your hotel’s fluorescent lamps and ballasts will:

  • Reduce energy consumption
  • Lower the hotel’s energy cost
  • Simplify maintenance and stocking requirements (low life-cycle costs), and
  • Provide illumination that closely resembles natural light

According to one property installation conducted by Cushman & Wakefield, “these products can reduce total system wattage by over 45% relative to the use of older T12 fluorescent systems driven by magnetic ballasts.”

Description
T8 lamps: Slim profile enables them to function more efficiently including longer lamp life, better lumen maintenance and higher color rendering capability.

Electronic ballasts: Designed to provide right voltage and current to lamp (programmable model). Use high frequency and solid-state circuitry instead of heavy copper. Save one watt of energy and product more light for each watt, run cooler and last longer.

Business Case
Installing new high performance T8 lamps along with electronic ballasts in guest bathrooms and the back-of-house of a 300-room hotel.

In guest bathrooms, two 40-watt fluorescent lights can be replaced with 25-watt T8 lamps and electronic ballast. The 290 back-of-house lamps, which run on average of 18 hours, can be converted to 25-watt T8 lamps.

Energy and Cost Analysis

[Assumptions: occupancy gathered from P&L, hours of lamps based on national average, and one electronic ballast for two T8 lamps installed]

Cost per kWh as stated on electric bills is approximately $0.144.
Cost per T8 lamp and half of electronic ballast including installation is $14.25.

GUEST BATHROOM

Equation:
Guest Rooms X Occupancy Rate X Number of Lamps X Reduction in Wattage X Number of Hours Used X Total Days X Kwhr Multiplier = Total kWh Saved

300     X         67%    X         2          X         15w     X         6          X         365     X         .001    = 13,205.7 kWh

BACK-OF-HOUSE

Equation:
Number of Lamps X Reduction in Wattage X Number of Hours Used X Total Days X Kwhr Multiplier = Total kWh Saved

290     X         15w     X         18        X         365     X         .001    =       28,579.5 kWh

Energy & Cost Savings Annual Electric Savings No. Lamps
Guest Bathroom 13,206 kWh 600
Back-of-House 28,580 kWh 290
Total Annual kWh Savings 41,786 kWh
Annual kWh Electric Savings($0.144) $6,017

Investment Payback (ROI) Investment ($14.25 ea) No. Lamps
Guest Bathroom $8,550 600
Back-of-House $4,133 290
Total Investment $12,683
Return on Investment 2.1 years

The numbers speak for themselves. You can easily calculate your green hotel’s custom lighting project’s ROI and savings by simply using the above equations. For more information on T8 lamps or to reach EcoGreenHotel’s recommended lighting specialists click here to contact us.

Overall, lighting represents almost a quarter (sometimes even more) of all electricity consumed in a typical hotel, not including its effect on cooling loads. According to ENERGY STAR, lighting retrofits can reduce lighting electricity use by 50 percent or more, depending on the starting point, and cut cooling energy requirements by 10 to 20 percent as well.

Even if your hotel’s budget is small you can still reduce your costs by upgrading to compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) – if you haven’t already. A Michigan Marriott replaced its public-space incandescent lights with CFLs and saved more than $40,000 in energy and maintenance costs. The historic Willard InterContinental in Washington, D.C., installed CFLs in common areas and guest rooms. The investment resulted in few complaints about lighting quality and a six-month payback based on energy savings.

In conclusion, whether you call them energy efficient, energy saving, high performance or high efficiency lighting, upgrading your hotel lights to the new generation technology makes cents!

First Virtual Hospitality Trade Show

May 20

It seems sustainability options have finally come to the mainstream for trade shows and conventions. In recent years green practices have been adopted by convention centers, event planners, vendors and contractors to dramatically reduce costs and their environmental impact.

As the 2010 Waste Expo kicks off this week in Atlanta, EcoGreenHotel takes a look at the solid waste and environmental impacts of Trade Shows. WasteExpo is North America’s largest solid waste and recycling tradeshow serving both the private and public sectors. The show boasts “green” initiatives such as: extensive use of electronic media to eliminate paper, energy saving lighting, green cleaners, carpet made from recycled materials, and of course robust recycling programs.

It is held at the Georgia World Congress Center Authority in Atlanta which has recently adopted sustainability practices for its 3.9million square feet of space. Beyond the standard green building practices, the center works closely with a local Food Bank to ensure left over food and supplies from events do not go to waste. Plastic water bottles have been replaced with spring water coolers and food wastes are composted onsite.

But are these initiatives enough to create a sustainable trade show?

The most sustainable trade show is the recent advent of the virtual trade show. As the name implies, a virtual trade show is conducted online for all of the attendees and exhibitors in a virtual convention center. The nearly zero carbon footprint shows offer live speakers, interactive vendor booths, networking events, and opportunities to sample products and services. In today’s economy the time and cost savings alone make this option immensely more attractive than traditional shows. EcoGreenHotel likes the idea of the virtual trade show so much it has committed to attend the Spa Hospitality Expo on May 26 and 27. Please join us in our booth for your first virtual tradeshow experience. You can register for the free show at http://tiny.cc/dq4sh

Earth Day 2010: Engaging Your Hotel Guests & Community

Apr 13

A new report by, the non-profit research organization, Center for Responsible Travel (formerly Travel Center on Ecotourism and Sustainable Development) found that responsible tourism has withstood the global recession better than the tourism industry as a whole. Perhaps that’s one reason many hotels are eagerly embracing Earth Day (though we’d like to think that a growing commitment to sustainable practices plays a role).

Start a Community Garden
With just a little bit of space, raw material, and effort, a community garden within your green hotel’s landscape serves many purposes. It can get guests and the community actively involved in an eco-related activity; produce fresh fruits and vegetables for your restaurant/kitchen or beautiful flowers for scenery. It also helps bring the community closer together at your hotel! It will definitely leave an impression.

Serve Sustainable Food
If you have a restaurant at your green hotel, allow your Chefs to serve sustainable entrees. When the bill comes, diners can donate $1 to a non-profit charitable eco-friendly organization like the National Geographic Society.

“Go Green, Save Green” Package
Offer guests a custom green stay package, which can include room discount, favorable hybrid parking spot, and percent off on organic products and services at your gift shop, spa, restaurant, or bar.

Change the Lights
Being a “green” hotel starts with the basics. Make sure all the lights in the hotel are eco-friendly to help conserve energy. Compact fluorescent light bulbs, halogen light bulbs and LEDs are all good choices.

Earth Day Green Project
Enlist your guests and employees to take part in a community restoration, clean-up or any other environmentally friendly project (even if it’s simply planting trees). Afterwards, they can take advantage of discounts at your bar, restaurant, or on eco-minded spa services.

Replace Disposables
May of the items hotel guests and employees use every day can be improved to be reusable and reduce waste. Replace your drinking cups with these compostable World Art hot & cold cups or how about a refillable water bottle, for starters.

Join a Resource Pledge
Make a pact (or policy) with your employees, guests and others, locally or on a national scale, to help conserve resources. Involve your guests by inviting them to participate in a “Take a short shower” program (give out branded shower timers that guest can take home and use) or “Turn all lights off during daylight hours” or simply purchase recycled paper only from now on; etc.

Attend a Rally
Sheer force of numbers helps to raise awareness about environmental issues. Show your community and guests your commitment to being a green hotel. Be a face in the crowd at a local rally to help tip the scale in favor of eco-friendliness. You can enlist employees and guests to attend. Gather for pre-rally fun and shuttle everyone to the event! Your hotel’s good stewardship will definitely recognized.

Hybrid Parking & Bike Rentals
Offer complimentary, special spot, parking for hybrid vehicles and offer free or discounted bike rentals to guests to explore your city. Don’t forget the bike rack!

Hold a “Green” Wine & Food Event
Celebrate the day with local wineries, restaurants, farms and locally sourced products. You can offer a special Sustainable Wine & Food lunch or dinner to your guests and community or go all out and have a festival right at your green hotel. Either way, you’ll definitely make the local newspaper (make sure you let them know in advance).

EcoGreenHotel encourages Hotels and Resorts to Participate in Earth Hour 2009 to “Support Hospitality Sustainability”

Feb 25

EcoGreenHotel encourages the hospitality industry to participate in Earth Hour 2009, at 8.30pm on Saturday the 28th of March. There are several areas within a hotel or resort that lights and power can be minimized or eliminated for one hour. For more information on Earth Hour and to sign up to be counted as a participating hotel or resort please visit www.earthhour.org.
The hospitality industry can make a huge impact in environmental awareness by implementing green initiatives into their everyday business and Earth Hour is an excellent launch of an ongoing environmentally friendly program for your property.
The following steps should be taken to properly plan for a safe and successful Earth Hour:
• Promote associate involvement by creating a “Green Hotel Team” with a “Green Leader” from your management team and at least one associate from each department.
• The “Green Hotel Team” should meet weekly starting the week of March 2nd 2009 to come up with a list of lights, equipment and machinery that can be powered down for one hour on March 28th without jeopardizing the security or safety of your guests or associates.
• Involve the sales and marketing department to create an event around the night and promote to the local community through reaching out to your top accounts and possibly a press release.
• Earth Hour falls on a Saturday evening which may allow your restaurant to create a promotion around the event to bring in local clientele.
• Properly staff your property the night of the event to insure safety and security.

Send an email to info@EcoGreenHotel.com about your initiatives for Earth Hour and you will be included on www.EcoGreenHotel.com as well as included in further press releases supporting Earth Hour.

For tips and tools for energy reduction to support Earth Hour visit www.EcoGreenHotel.com.
