Makeover Monday: New York, Boston Hotels Spruce Up

I'm pleased to announce that this week's Makeover Monday is the first penned by Hotel Check-In intern Julia Ryan. - BD

The new hotel renovation projects selected for this week's Makeover Monday take us to the Boston waterfront and the Big Apple, where one hotel's doing its part to let New York keep its title of "the city that never sleeps."

Last week, we profiled hotel renovations in cities including San Diego, St. Louis and Washington D.C.

Affinia Manhattan

In the last four months, the Affinia Manhattan hotel completed a $25 million makeover that updated all the guest rooms and added 92 new rooms designed by renowned hotel designer David Rockwell's firm. The existing rooms received new beds and new lighting that brightens up the room. The former muted dark colors were changed to bright white and green colors. With the Chelsea Flower Market nearby, large floral panels in the rooms help bring the outside in. In the next month or two, the Affinia Manhattan also will begin an update of its public spaces including the lobby and meeting spaces.

To publicize the improvements, the Affinia Manhattan is holding an auction through Feb. 2 called "Sunday Night Makeover." The auction began on Jan. 19.The winning bidder will be able to call one of the hotel's stylish one-bedroom suites home each and every Sunday -- for a full year. They'll also have the ability to leave luggage at the hotel and they won't have to pay for Wi-Fi.

The hotel's goal: To show how much fun Sundays in the city can be. (And it doesn't hurt that the hotel doesn't have too much to lose.),"Sunday night has always been a tough sell," says Affinia Manhattan general manager Steven Kipnis. The hotel values Sunday night stays for an entire year at $20,000.
