Field to be Sold Off to Pave Way for New Langstone Hotel

GREEN space next to a major roundabout is set to be sold off – paving the way for a controversial hotel development.Leaders at Hampshire County Council agreed in principal to dispose of Bosmere Field, near the Langstone roundabout off the A27.

The decision came a day after developers laid out their plans at a public meeting for an 80-bedroom Travelodge hotel and a separate 300-cover restaurant on the land.

No formal deal has been signed, but leaders have agreed to sell the land if planning consent is granted by Havant Borough Council.Brewery Greene King is proposing to build a farmhouse-style restaurant on the site.

Fasset Ltd, which manages Langstone Technology Park, has drawn up the plans and says a budget hotel is needed to cater for the business community.But residents have spoken of their concerns about traffic congestion on Langstone Road – the only road to Hayling – and overspill parking in surrounding roads.

Ray Cobbett, co-ordinator for Hampshire Friends of the Earth, said: ‘Basically they clearly feel they have a duty towards taxpayers to get rid of surplus land. There’s nothing new about that.

‘I would hope that whatever happens to the land is very visible – that there’s a public tendering process.’Ann Griffiths, who sits on residents’ panel Havant and Bedhampton Community First, was concerned about development as the A3023 has been described as ‘polluted and congested’ in the borough council’s Core Strategy.
