Energy and Water Savings on The Menu at New Whitbread Site

Whitbread - owners of budget hotel chain Premier Inn - has announced the latest step in sustainability with green drives on water and energy.Showcased as the chain opens its latest green credential themed hotel in Cornwall as part its carbon reduction strategy.

Premier Inn, which is also the UK's largest hotel chain, has opened a 65-bedroom hotel and 210-cover restaurant in Camborne in the south west of England. More than £5.9m has been poured into making the hotel green in the hotel and restaurant which will employ more than 40 people and bring important new jobs to the local area. Locally sourced building materials were used in the build including Callywaith Cornish stone.

It is the 10th sustainable purpose-built hotel developed by the chain and features include 10kW solar PV mounted onto the roof to offset four electric car charging ports. And the third backed as green by the chain after its second in Burgess Hill in West Sussex and first build in Tamworth Staffordshire.

Innovations used at the hotel include ground source heat pumps which are due to provide 70% of the hotels hot water, heating and cooling.Grey water recycling and 'lowflow' showerheads in guest bathrooms and toilets are flushed with recycled water from showers and baths to cut down on water use.Very low energy LED lighting is used in the hotel reception, bars and restaurant areas.

Whitbread's head of energy and environment, Chris George, said: "Our intention with the project was to learn from our existing sustainable hotels at and design an even more impressive and sustainable product.
