Airport reveals plans for £22m ‘eco-hotel’

A MULTI-MILLION pound, eco-friendly hotel development at East Midlands Airport will create an estimated 150 jobs for the area, developers have claimed.

Construction is under way on a £22 million, four star Radisson Blu hotel at its site in Castle Donington.

The hotel is being built by MAG Developments in partnership with EMA and the Azure Property Group on the airport’s Pegasus Business Park.

It will feature energy efficient elements such as motion sensitive lighting and a sustainable water drainage system, which will utilise water from porous paving in the car park, attenuation tanks and a rainwater harvesting system to serve the toilets and external landscaped areas.

In line with the airport’s commitment to becoming ‘carbon neutral’ by 2012, the hotel is planned to deliver an 87 per cent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions and supply more than 90 per cent of its consumed energy from a renewable source.

EMA managing director Penny Coates said: “This exciting development is a major boost for the region and reinforces the airport’s role as a key economic driver.

“It is also a huge step forward for the airport in developing a facility that meets both the needs of passengers and local businesses.
