WOODSTOCK— Having to dispose hundreds of TVs isn't a problem most people run into, but when you're a hotel updating technology it's a problem requiring a unique solution.Quality Hotel and Suites recently bought new flat-screen televisions for each of its rooms. The new models were replacements for sets bought more than a decade ago.
"It was just time to update," said Dan Craig, night manager and Green Team member. The hotel's Green Team focuses on environmentally friendly initiatives and took on the task of getting rid of the TVs responsibly.Calls were made to secondhand stores throughout the city to see if they would take them and resell them, but not many establishments were interested. So the next step was to ask all of the hotel's employees if they would like to take one or more home, or if they knew anyone that would. But not too many people were interested in the heavy and awkward televisions.
"We were left wondering what to do. We wanted to make sure they were disposed of properly, so we started looking around at our options," he said.Team members were told about a Cambridge-based company called Greentec that would pick up the 110 sets and recycle them at no cost to the hotel.
"We thought that was great and then we found out that they donate any of the proceeds from recycling the TVs to Fusion Centre in Ingersoll. We were sold then," Craig said.On Tuesday morning, an employee from Greentec loaded up the sets and some other outdated electronics, including photocopiers, printers and an old fridge into a giant large green bin.The bin was then taken to Cambridge where employees disassemble the electronics.
